Winter Driving: Take Advice on Your Driving Lessons

Winter is a time of year when the snow falls, it can be fun for everyone, however when driving in snowy and icy conditions you can never be too careful. Snow causes a big increase in accidents on the roads and people need to be more aware of the dangers of winter driving.

If you can help it and your journey is not essential then it's advised that you stay in, however if it is necessary and you do go driving around the streets, make sure the snow plows and salt trucks have been there first. Naturally your first thought would not be to prepare for an incident in the snow; however it's very important that you do.

Make an emergency kit that stays in the car at all times, this includes:

Ice scraper and de-icer
A shovel for snowy conditions
Battery jump leads
First aid kit
Torch
A warm jacket
Blanket
A pair of boots
If you take driving lessons your instructor should inform you on how to stay safe in bad weather conditions. They will also show you how to prepare your car and check that the vehicle is safe.

Checking that your vehicle is safe and ready for the road involves:
Getting your vehicle serviced
Making sure you have enough fuel for your journey
Checking wiper blades to ensure they aren't worn and will keep your windscreen clean and clear
Checking your light bulbs regularly and keeping the headlights clean
Checking tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure and have at least 3mm of tread depth for extra grip to the road
After your driving lessons you are able to take a pass plus course that will include a lesson focusing on bad weather conditions. The instructor will tell you the precautions you should take when driving in winter weather. You may be told too:

Keep your speed down
be aware of vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists)
Avoid harsh steering
Brake and accelerate slowly
Use fog lights in fog, snow or rain.
Many people find that having driving lessons in winter conditions is a scary experience and don't have the confidence to do it, however it's better to first experience winter weather conditions in a car with your instructor as they will give you helpful advice on how to deal with the situation and make you feel at ease knowing they can take control of the car at anytime.
